The Language Arts 12 course is designed to be a combination of British Literature (following the emphasis on American Literature in LA 11), Advanced Composition, and Advanced Public Speaking. Using these areas as a basis, I have designed this course with three avenues of study: Literature/Reading, Writing/Speaking, Grammar/Usage.

Assessments will include unit exams (combination objective/subjective), unannounced “pop” quizzes throughout on various concepts and readings, individual projects, group projects, individual formal papers of various lengths and requirements, informal and formal written responses, and formal speeches made to the class. These are all required, in full, for passing grades, unless IEPs offer alternative assessments.

My objectives for this course are twofold:

I want my students to be prepared for the rigor of upcoming college work, whether it's a technical program, a two-year course, or a four-year (and beyond) degree at a University. Students going on to any of these courses of study after high school will need to conduct their scholarship honestly and with confidence, and they will need to present themselves well both orally and in writing.

I want my students to be prepared for the demands of the working world, whether they will enter a career directly after high school or after further study. No matter a person's career or life course, he or she needs to contribute to the surrounding culture and express opinions, participate in representative government, interact with coworkers and the public at large, and think critically about the world.

Because of these two objectives, coursework in LA 12 will include practical lessons in résumé-writing and using logic, as well as in properly citing a scholarly essay and analyzing classic works of English literature.
