Ongoing Assignments:
· Weekly vocabulary/spelling quizzes. Words will be assigned and discussed on Mondays, quizzes will be on Fridays. You may throw out your lowest-scoring quiz before final grades are assessed for each quarter.
· Daily Oral Language: Each class period will begin by a short grammar, usage, or analogy/critical thinking lesson that will be on the board or overhead.
· Free Reading: Students are expected to bring a book (novel, biography, how-to, fiction, non-fiction, etc.) of their own choosing daily to class, and some in-class reading time will be provided weekly.

Purpose:
This class is designed to both supplement previous language study and to expand your reading, writing, and literary interpretation abilities. Language areas covered include vocabulary/spelling, grammar/usage, and reading, writing/organization, and speaking skills. |

Grading Policy:
Letter grades will be awarded for individual tasks, as follows:
A=90-100%
B=80-89%
C=70-79%
D=60-69%
F=<60%

Probable works of literature studied during this course: Short fiction from various texts, The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, and a drama version of The Diary of Anne Frank. Poetry of various types, and its elements, will also be studied, as well as various short pieces of non-fiction.
Major concepts learned during this course include fiction and non-fiction reading strategies; plot structure; parts of speech; sentence and paragraph structure; beginnings of citing sources; punctuation; poetic elements and figurative language; essay writing; and dialogue and script writing.
