In 1985 the State of Minnesota passed a bill creating the Post
Secondary Enrollment Options Program (PSEO) which allows high school juniors and
seniors to take courses full-or part-time at a post-secondary institution for
high school credit. The program provides students with a greater variety of
class offerings and the opportunity to pursue more challenging coursework than
may be available at the high school. The tuition, fees, and required textbooks
are at no cost to the students.
Students who take advantage of the PSEO program usually attend
schools near them like Minnesota West Community and Technical College - Canby
Campus or Granite Falls Campus or Southwest State University. The PSEO
program is offered throughout the state.
To fulfill all of their high school requirements students must
make sure they are taking enough college credits. Four college credits is
equivalent to one high school credit. Graduation Standard packages are
also a concern to some students but it is very possible that the college courses
will match all the requirements of the standards necessary for the students to
graduate.
