Mr. Scott Monson
Growing Up
I was born at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar, MN, on February 19, 1966. My mom, Joann, worked for over 40 years as an administrative assistant at the Alumni and Development Foundation at North Dakota State University, where she inspired my lifelong love for the NDSU Bison. My dad, Terry, worked in automotive sales and later opened his own car lot. From both my parents, I learned invaluable lessons about hard work, perseverance, and faith in others.
I grew up in Lake Park, MN, and graduated from Lake Park High School in 1984. While there, I participated in football, basketball, American Legion baseball, theater productions, and the National Honor Society. Our mascot was the Parker—an unusual one, and to this day I’m still not quite sure what it was!
Education
After high school, I attended Mayville State College on an academic and athletic scholarship, playing football for one year before transferring to Moorhead State University. I graduated in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Education and a minor in Coaching.
With encouragement from my parents and my high school principal, Russ Robinson, I pursued graduate studies through Tri-College University (Moorhead State, Concordia College, and NDSU). I earned my Master of Science in Educational Leadership in 1999, along with Sixth Year Certification. That same year, I completed K–12 principal licensure, followed by my district superintendent licensure in 2000. I will always be grateful to Mr. Robinson for encouraging me to consider school leadership.
Career
My career began as a business education teacher and coach, serving in Dell Rapids, SD (1989–1992); Spearfish, SD (1992–1993); Grand Rapids, MN (1993–1994); Chokio-Alberta, MN (1994–1995); and Frazee, MN (1995–1999). During those years, I taught a wide range of business courses (with accounting being a favorite) and coached multiple sports.
In 1999, I became Principal at Fulda High School, followed by service as Benson High School Principal (2000–2004). From 2004–2014, I was Superintendent at Morris Area Schools, where I helped lead a $27 million construction project, passed operating levy referendums, and oversaw a consolidation with Cyrus Schools.
From 2014–2020, I served as Superintendent in Marshall, MN, and was involved in passing a building bond referendum and other district initiatives. I then joined SitelogIQ in 2020 as a Senior Business Consultant and later Midwest Regional Sales Manager, supporting schools across several states with facility and educational planning.
In 2022, I was honored to be named Superintendent of Minneota Public Schools, where I am proud to be a Viking.
Family
My wife, Allison (Kruger), is an Associate Athletic Director at Southwest Minnesota State University and previously served as head women’s basketball coach there. We are blessed with two daughters—Logan, a 2nd grader here in Minneota, and Jordan, a lively three-year-old who is excited to become a Viking herself in the future. We also share our home with Jersey, our 13-year-old German Shorthair.
Hobbies
Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with family, fishing for walleyes, officiating high school football, and umpiring softball and baseball. I’m also a fan of reading and cooking whenever I get the chance.
